Welcome to the ESL Department
ACCI has many newcomers to Canada who are learning English as a second language or even as a third language. Our school offers a variety of programs to help support English Language Learners (ELLs). ELLs are assessed on arrival to determine their level of English. A student’s timetable is created based on the results of this assessment. Below is a list of courses available for our ELLs. Hard work and practice using English outside the classroom help determine how quickly students move through the levels and graduate to regular English classes. ESL Levels and Courses: ESL A Level: ESLA and GLS1—Beginner Level (taken in the same semester) ESL B Level: ESLB and ELS2—High Beginners (taken in the same semester) ESL C Level: ESLC and/or ELDC—Intermediate Level (taken separately or in the same semester) ESL D Level: ESLD and/or ELDD—Intermediate to Advanced (taken separately or in the same semester) ESL E Level: ESLE and/or ELDE—Advanced (taken separately or in the same semester) As well, Albert Campbell Collegiate Institute offers ESL modified courses in a number of subject areas to support ELLs, such as geography, history and science. These courses provide modifications and accommodations to assist ELLs in maintaining and developing skills while earning credits. In addition, there are some after school tutoring opportunities available. Students should speak to their ESL teachers about signing up for tutoring. Our program incorporates technology, cultural and media studies. Computer based programs are used to enhance learning experiences and increase literacy skills. Students are expected to speak English in the ESL classes. Students are also strongly encouraged to bring electronic translation dictionaries to class. The ESL Department office is located on the second floor, in Room 222. |
